Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery and Continuity Planning need not be a complex issue.  It is just about assessing risks and putting the relevant plans in place to mitigate those 'risks cost' effectively. Disaster Recover and Continuity Planning is closely related to IT Administration so if you haven't read this page we recommend you do so.

Backups are only good if you can use them. Recovery from backup media has to be tested on a regular basis.
And always remember to test recovery with the kind of systems you will be using in a disaster recovery situation.

  • What would you do if your server is stolen or suffered irreparable damage?
  • Do you take your backup tapes offsite every night?
  • Do you have support staff to reinstate a new server?
  • Have you tested that your backup tapes can restore your data?
  • Do you have your essential software stored off-site?
  • Have you looked at your backup strategy since putting it in place - are all the files that need backing up being backed up?
  • Is your Business Continuity plan languishing in a drawer somewhere, is it really up to date?
  • Do you think you are saving time and money by putting off upgrades and installing critical updates?
  • Do you have one 'superuser' who knows your systems - what happen if he/she left the company?

If you cannot answer these questions to your satisfaction your company could be at risk from being unable to recover from a disaster and this could affect your business.
