Here are some useful tips and tricks that we think you will find helpful.

 One click is better than two.

  • Right Click the Start Button.
  • Select Explore.
  •  Look at the top, where the menu is, and click the "Tools" menu.
  •  In the Tools menu, click "Folder Options".
  •  In the section called "Click items as follows," choose "Single-click to open an item (point to select)".
  •  Click "OK" to confirm your choice and close the window.

One Click Shutdown:

To Shut own your computer with just One Click :

  • Right click on your Desktop
  • Select New
  • Select Shortcut
  • Type shutdown -s -t 00
  • Select Next
  • Type Shutdown PC
  • Select Finish
  • Right click on the new ICON on your Desktop named Shutdown PC.
  • Select Properties
  • Click on the Change Icon button
  • Scroll along until you find the Red Shutdown Icon
  • Select it and click OK
  • Select OK

Now test it to see if it works.

Turn the Preview Pane off:

The safest way to view your email is to turn the preview pane off, so only those messages you deliberately open are displayed. If malicious code was integrated with the message and the Preview Pane was on, the damage would have already been done. To turn it off:

  • Outlook Express: Click View Menu > Layout and remove the checkmark beside Show Preview Pane.
  • Outlook 2000/XP: Click View Menu > Preview Pane.
  • Outlook 2003: Click View Menu > Reading Pane > Off.
  • Netscape: Click View Menu > Show/Hide > Message Pane.

Are you having problems with your PC and wish to try and fix it yourself?

Here are two informative sites that offer free support in addition to providing links to other helpful support sites - Computer Hope and The Free Site. If you are having problems with some type of setting in your software it's usually fixable under the Tools>Options menus. Learn all about DNS.

Shortcut Keys:

These shortcut keys are great:

Hold down the Ctrl key (Control Key) and while this is held down press the key listed below :

C = Copy selected areas of text or graphics.

V = Paste the copied items.

X = Delete items and place in the clip board ready for Pasting.

Z = This will place the items deleted back again - Undo (pressing multiple times will replace previous deleted items).

Y = This will Redo

You have a router, either wireless or provided by your telecom/Internet Service Provider, and you cannot browse the Internet using Internet Explorer or send and receive email using Outlook. Try this:

  • Start
  • Run
  • Type cmd in the Open: box
  • A black window will appear, in that Window type ping www.novell.com
  • If you get 4 lines of Request timed out. then switch your router off and then on again, and when the router has booted up try to browse the internet again using Internet Explorer.
  • If you get 4 lines of Reply from..... then reboot your PC and try browsing the internet again.

Computer Problem:

When you have a problem with your computer always switch it off and on again - has the problem disappeared - if not contact Lambda Computing.

Email and Avoiding Spam:

Get an an email address from a popular web based email system for use on the internet - do not use your own personal email address that you have with your Internet Service Provider. This will help reduce the amount of spam you get in your personal email address. Also, avoid putting your personal email address on web sites.

Do not use the 'preview' mode in your email viewer.

Do not reply to spam.

Delete unsolicited e-mail from people you do not know.

Sound Card Ports:

Most sound cards since 1999 conform to Microsoft's PC 99 standard for color coding the external connectors as follows:

Color
Function
Pink
Analogue microphone input (microphone has low input so use this port not Line in)
Light blue
Analog line level input. (for electronic devices with high output e.g. tape recorders, DVD players)
Lime green
Analog line level output for the main stereo signal (front speakers or headphones).
Black
Analog line level output for rear speakers.
Silver
Analog line level output for side speakers.
Orange
S/PDIF digital output (sometimes used as an analog line output for a center speaker and subwoofer instead)

Windows Quick Launch Bar:

  • Right click the Task Bar (the bar at the bottom of your screen with Start in the left corner).
  • Select Toolbars
  • Select Quick Launch

PC Running Slowly?

Check your RAM - right click My Computer>Properties>General Tab. Purchase more RAM. You need (as at Feb 2007) at least 2Gb. Check Free space on your hard disk - right click My Computer>Explore>right click Local Disk (C:)>Properties. Ensure you're not running out of hard disk space.

Word/Excel/PowerPoint takes a long time to open a folder in Save As....

This could be because you have mapped network drives that are off-line i.e. you have set up file sharing on two or more PCs. For example, a laptop on your home network that is switched off. Disconnect the networked drives by right clicking on them in Explorer and selecting Disconnect.

Mouse is 'Sticky'

Unscrew the ball cover on the underside of the mouse and with a small screw driver clean the dirt off the mouse ball rollers.

Always Backup:

Although Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup for XP Home by performing the following steps:

  • Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
  • Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
  • Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup
